The Hive-O-Sphere has two blockchains. The primary HIVE Blockchain tracks transactions that use the HIVE cryptocurrency. HIVE-Engine is a secondary block chain that tracks a variety of user created tokens and swap tokens.
The system uses swap tokens to transfer funds between blockchains. The base token for HIVE-Engine is called SWAP.HIVE. When you transfer funds from the HIVE Blockchain to the HIVE-Engine Blockchain it turns into SWAP.
HIVE Engine holds the alt-coins used by the many tribes and games taking place in the HIVE ecosystem.
HIVE-Engine holds swap coins for a variety of popular cryptocurrencies including BTC, ETH, LTC, STEEM, etc. You can hold and trade BTC on HIVE-Engine without the high gas fees.
A large number of sites interface with Hive-Engine. The three primary online exchanges are Hive-Engine.com, LeoDex and TribalDex. All three sites interface with the market that allows people trade HIVE related currencies. I use all three as the different exchanges provide slightly different views of my account.
As I understand, the TribalDex team maintains both Hive-Engine.com and TribalDex.com. Hive-Engine.com is intended to be a bare-bones interface and TribalDex is a suped-up interface.
