Carlson Companies was established in 1938 by Curt Carlson as the Gold Bond Stamp Company. Gold Bond was a popular rewards program in grocery stores. Carlson purchased the Minneapolis Radisson Hotel in 1962. As interest in rewards stamps diminished, Carlson changed its focus to hospitality. They purchased TGI Fridays in 1975 and Comfort Suites in 1987. They built the Park Plaza, Park Inn and Comfort Inns and Suites brands to address niche markets in the hotel industry.
Hoovers reports that, in 2006, Carlson Hotels had 176,000 employees and $37 billion in sales.
