Dollar Tree

Dollar Tree is a chain of discount stores with over 15,000 locations. The firm is headquartered in Chesapeake, Virginia.

The chain was founded by KR Perry as a Ben Franklin store in 1954. The first store was in in Norfolk, Virginia. The company changed its name to K&K 5 and 10 (five and dime) and spawned a sister store called K&K Toys. Both stores expanded along the East Coast. K&K Toys merged with KB Toys.

In 1986, the stores caved into inflation and changed its name to Only $1.00. Then in 1993, The company changed to Dollar Tree to allow for multiple price points.

The company went public on NASDAQ in 1995 and trades with the symbol DLTR.

The company has expanded through the years by building stores and an aggressive merger strategy in the discount store market. Acquisitions include:

Dollar Bill$, Inc in 1996 - This was a 136 chain store from Chicago
Only $One in 1999 - This as a NY based chain
Dollar Express in 2000 - This was a Philadelphia based chain
DEAL$ in 2006 - this was a 138 store chain owned by SuperValu of Minneapolis.
Dollar Giant in 2010 - This was a Vancouver, BC based chain with 84 stores. It is now base of Dollar Tree Canada.
2014-2015: Dollar Tree acquired Family Dollar. The Charlotte, NC based chain had 8000 stores. The FTC required Family Dollar divest 300 stores before the merger.
