Zales, the Diamond Store, is a nationwide network of jewelers. You can order jewelry online and pick up at the local store.
The chain was started by Morris Zale, William Zale, and Ben Lipsh in 1924. The company was one of the first jewelers to offer credit for jewelry purchase with the campaign: "a penny down and a dollar per week." The company opened its first mall store in 1957 and grew to a national chain with the expansion of shopping malls.
- 1924: Zales launched.
- 1944: Zales acquired Corrigan's of Houston and launched the Bailey Banks & Biddle brand.
- 1946: Zales moved its headquarters from Wichita Falls to Dallas.
- 1957: Zales went public with the symbol ZLC
- 1986-1989: People's Jeweler and Swarovski International of Austria launched a leveraged buyout of Zales
- 1989: The company acquired the 469 store chain Gordon's Jewelers
- 1992: The over-leveraged company declared bankruptcy. It took five years to reorganize and regain profitability.
- 1988: Zales launched zales.com.
- 2014 Signet acquired Zales.
