Adventist Movement
The Adventist Movement began as part of the Biblical Restoration Movement that took place in the early 1800s. The movement has spit into several branches with the Seventh Day Adventist church being the largest.
I placed links to primary sites in the movement in the Adventist Directory and present a brief history of the movement below.
The Millerite Movement
Adventism refers to a religious movement that was heavily influenced by William Miller (1782 – 1849) who was part of the broader biblical restoration movement that took part in the early years of the United States.
Miller's interpretation of the Book of Daniel concluded that the second coming would occur on October 22, 1844. The event did not take place. Followers called the non-event "The Great Disappointment" but mustered on.
The second great luminary of the movement was Ellen G. White (1827 – 1915). Ms. White was a prolific writer who claims to have been inspired by multiple visions. Some articles indicate that Adventists consider Ellen White to be a prophetess.
The Seventh Day Adventist Church was organized on May 21, 1863. This became the primary branch of the movement. Some of the branches of the movement split from the SDA. The branches often differ on their feelings about Ellen White.
I pulled the first video from DareToBelieve.com which is an online ministry. The second video is a public interview with former members the church.
There are several videos on Youtube that discuss whether or not the movement is a cult. It seems to me that that organization is quite diverse. Some of the branches show cult-like behavior. This video is critical but less judgmental.
Branches of the Movement
Wikipedia listed several churches that trace to the Millerite Movement. These include:
- Christadelphian is a term founded by the British writer John Thomas. The movement claims 50,000 members scattered around the globe.
- Advent Christian Church was founded in 1860.
- Primitive Advent Christian Church separated from the Advent Christian Church.
- The Seventh-day Adventist Church formed in 1863 and is the largest church in the movement.
- Seventh Day Adventist Reform Movement split from the main movement on disagreement about military service during World War I.
- Davidian Seventh-day Adventist Association was formed by disfellowed members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The name comes from a book written by Victor Houteff, in 1929.
- Branch Davidians, led by David Koresh, left the Davidian movement. The branch was involved in the Waco siege of 1993.
- Creation Seventh Day Adventist Church split from the Seventh Day Adventist church in 1988 largely over legal and Intellectual Property matters.
- United Seventh-Day Brethren split from the Church of God Adventist in 1947.
