Dippin' Dots is a chain offering "flash frozen" ice cream and ice yogurt. The company exposes drops of cream to liquid nitrogen creating a unique texture of ice cream.
I have not tried the product. I tend to avoid foods with food coloring. The video tells the Dippin' Dot story by a person who loves the product.
The company was started by Curt Jones of New Grand Chain, Ill. Mr Jones was looking for innovative ways to create cattle feed. He discovered the techniques also made a tasty treat.
The company established its first store and headquarters in Paducah, Kentucky.
The company filed a patent for its product in 1992. In 1996, they attempted to sue a competitor (Mini Melts) for patent infringement. it turns out that that the firm made a mistake on its patent applications. After years of litigation Dippin' Dots lost the suit in 2007. Attempts to save the company failed and they were forced into bankruptcy in 2011.
Scott Fischer of Oklahoma acquired the sticky remains of the company from bankruptcy court in 2012 and the company is on the rise again.
Dippin' Dots bought the company Doc Popcorn which sells gourmet popcorn franchises in 2014. So you will often find Dippin' Dots and Doc Popcorn sold side by side at locations such as Fabulous Freddy's.
