In 1931 by Maurice Labovitz a women's clothing store in Duluth, Minnesota called Maurices. The store gradually expanded in mid-size markets.

The stores were purchased by the American Retail Group of the Netherlands based Brenninkmeijer family in 1978.

Maurices was acquired by The Dressbarn in 2005. The Dressbarn acquired the Tween Brands group which marketed to girls from 12 to 14 through the Justice Brand.

There are over a thousand stores in the Maurices Chain which offers women's clothing in midsize markets.

The Dressbarn changed its name to The Ascena Retail Group in 2011 and changed its ticker from DBRN to ASNA at the same time.

Ascena acquired a group called Charming Shoppes which owned the brands: Catherines, Lane Bryant, Cacique and the now defunct Fashion Bug.
