JAB Holding Company, named for Joh. A. Benckiser, is a Luxembourg based financial group that has been buying up consumer brands as seen on the list to the right.
Acquisition History
In this section I will start piecing together the acquisition history as I encounter the acquisition in other research.
- 1828: Ludwig Reimann and the German chemist Johann Adam Benckiser started the chemical firm Joh. A. Benckiser GmbH.
- WWII: Albert Reimann Sr. and Albert Reimann Jr. supported Hitler and used slave labor in the company during the war. They have since apologized.
- 2012: JAB acquired Peet's
History of Peet's
Peet's (peets.com) is a brand offering premium roasted coffee along with a chain of coffee shops ... which are often embedded in other businesses.
- 1966: An immigrant from the Netherlands, Alfred Peet opened the first Peet's Coffee, Tea & Spices in Berkeley, California on Vine Street near the University of California, Berkeley campus. It sold roasted coffee beans and teas.
- 1979: Sal Bonavita acquired the firm.
- 1984: Jerry Baldwin, a Starbucks founder, bought Peet's four locations
- 1987: Baldwin sold Starbucks to focus on Peet's with a four year non-compete clause.
- 2001: The company incorporated as Peet's Coffee and Tea Company and raised $26.4 million with an IPO on NASDAQ with the symbol PEET.
- 2012: JAB acquired Caribou Coffee based in Edina, Mn.
- 2014: JAB acquired Einstein Brothers Bagels
- 2014: JAB and Peet's acquired Mighty Leaf Tea which was founded by husband and wife team Gary Shinner and Jill Portman in 1996 in Emeryville, California..
- 2015: JAB Holding Company acquired Keurig Green Mountain for $13.9 billion.
History of Green Mountain Roasters
- 1981: Bob Stiller and partner bought 2/3 state in a specialty coffee roasting company in Waitsfield, Vermont.
- 1982: company moved production to Waterbury, Vermont.
- 198?: Stiller bought out his partners for $100,000.
- 1993: engineers from a start up called Keurig approached GMCR about developing a single-cup coffee brewing system and GMCR invested in the company.
- 1996: GMCR acquired a 35% interest in the company.
- 1997: Keurig introduced the K-Cup with Green Mountain Coffee.
- Advertisement: You can buy K-Cups online at Coffee Wholesale.
- 2001: GMCR acquired Frontier Organic Coffee by Frontier Co-Op.
- 2002: GMCR signed agreement to sell organic coffee under the Newman's Own brand.
- 2006: GMCR took complete ownership of Keurig
- 2009: GMCR acquired the distribution center and rights to Tully brand
- 1992: Tom "Tully" O'Keefe started his chain in Kent, Wa with the goal of rapid expansion
- 2006: The Japanese firm Ito En acquired the firm.
- 2009: Tully sold its distribution and brand for $40.3 million to settle debts.
- 2010: Tully's Coffee International formed a partnership with DK Retail Co., Ltd to open 100 retail stores in South Korea.
- 2012: Tully filed chapter 11.
- 2009: GMCR acquired the distribution rights of Timothy's World Coffee
- 1975: Timothy and his wife Teresa Snelgrove started the company as a business-school project at the University of Western Ontario.
- The Snelgroves opened mmmuffins at Eaton Centre in Toronto, On.
- 1986: Ian and Becky McKinnon acquired business and became a K-Cup distributor.
- 2008: Sun Capital Partners acquired Timothy's
- 2009: GMCR acquired the coffee roasting business and Bruegger's Enterprises, Inc. acquired the retail business which included the stores mmmuffins and Michel's Baguette under the brand ThreeCaf Brands Canada Inc.
- 2014: GMCR changed its name to Keurig Green Mountain.
- 2015: JAB and Peet's acquired Stumptown Coffee Roasters from TSG Consumer Products.
- 2015: JAB and Peet's acquired Intelligentsia Coffee which was founded in 1995 offering premium roasted coffee.
- 2016: JAB acquired Krispy Kreme in a $1.35 billion deal. (USA Today)

- 2017: JAB acquired Bruegger's Bagels from Group Le Duff.
- 2018: JAB acquired the British sandwich shop Prêt à Manger which was established in the 1980s and had grown to over 450 restaurants.
- 2018: JAB and Krispy Kreme acquired Insomnia Cookies.
- 2020: Mars Incorporated sued JAB claiming that an executive stole 6,000 documents with proprietary info.
