Federal Express

The concept for Federal Express was conceived by Fred Smith (1944-present) in the 1960s. The idea was to create a nationwide delivery system with a central hub.

He tried creating the company in Little Rock in 1971. He moved the service to Memphis and commenced service in 1973. The company became profitable in 1976.

Federal Express shortened its name to FedEx in 1994 and acquired it's primary domain fedex.com.

In 1997, FedEx acquired Caliber System Inc. which owned an express delivery Roadway Services. This allowed them to expand into import/export markets and offer additional delivery services. The corporation changed to a holding company structure that trades on the NYSE with the symbol: FDX.

In 2004, Federal Express purchased a chain of printing stores called Kinkos. FedEx Kinkos changed its name to FedEx Office in 2008. FedEx Office (which has an affiliate program through Commission Junction) offers printing, design and shipping services. The site FedEx.com has information about Federal Express shipping service.
