Corporate History

This section lists merger activity involving the company that I come across in other research.

• 1955: The company was founded in Kansas City as a bookkeeping firm called United Business Company by Henry Bloch and his older brother Leon. Leon decided to go back to school to get a law degree and Henry hired his younger brother Richard. They discovered a big demand for tax preparation services.
• The company began franchising the company. As tax preparation does not require intensive capital investment, the company expanded quickly.
• 1978: HR Block acquired a staffing firm called Personnel Pool of America, Inc.
• 1980: H&R Block acquired an online service called CompuServe for $23 million.

  CompuServe History

  • 1969: The company was created as a subsidiary of Golden United Life Insurance called Compu-Serv Network, Inc. to provide communication services for the insurance company.
  • 1975: The company split off and began trading on the NASDAQ under the symbol CMPU.
  • 1977: the company adopted the name CompuServe.
  • 1980: CompuServe was acquired by HR Block.
  • In the 1980s and 1990s, CompuServe became the largest online service. It gave many their first taste of the fledgling "Internet"
  • 1996: HR Block sold 20% of CompuServe in an IPO for $200 million.
  • 1998: HR Block sold the rest of its shares to WorldCom for $1.2 billion of WCOM stock which it immediately sold. WorldCom kept the CompuServe network but sold its messaging system to AOL. Both technologies were replaced by the Internet. HR Block got out at the height of the market.
• 1986: H&R Block worked with the IRS to create an online filing system.
• 1991: H&R Block acquired Interim Systems Corporation and added it to Personnel Pool.
• 1992: H&R Block spun off its employment resources as Interim Services Inc. which was later renamed Spherion.
