Founded in 1972 in San Antonio as Clear Channel Communications by Lowry Mays and Billy McCombs.

- 1972: Founded as Clear Channel Communications.
- 1997: Clear Channel purchased billboard company Eller Media.
- In 1998:
Clear Channel purchased More Group PLC based in the UK. - 1999: Clear Channel acquired Cincinnati based Jacor Communications.
- 1999: Clear Channel bought AMFM (which had 355 stations in 83 markets) for $17.4 billion. This brought the total stations to 830 radio stations, 19 television stations, and over 425,000 outdoor displays in 32 countries.
- 2000: Clear Channel purchased Live Nation which it renamed Clear Channel Entertainment for $4.4B.
- 2005: Clear Channel Communications split into three separate companies: Clear Channel Communications broadcasts TV and radio. Clear Channel Outdoor owned outdoor displays, and Live Nation hosted events.
- 2006-2008: Thomas H. Lee Partners and Bain Capital Partners acquired Clear Channel for $18.7 billion.
- 2010: Company announced it was facing bankruptcy.
- 2010: TicketMaster acquires LiveNation to create Live Nation Entertainment.
- 2017: Company announced its bankruptcy and restructuring.
