This section lists events Tribune Media's history:

• June 10, 1847: The Tribune Company published the first edition of the Chicago Daily Tribune.
• 1869-1871: The company built its headquarters which burned in the Great Chicago Fire.
• 1855: Joseph Medill acquired an interest in the paper and full control in 1874. He died in 1899
• 1911: Robert R. McCormick and Joseph Medill Patterson (Medill's two grandsons) assumed leadership.
• 1919: Joseph Medill Patterson established New York News and eventually parted from the Tribune.
• 1924: The company launched a magazine called Liberty under a subsidiary called McCormick-Patterson. They sold this in 1931.
• 1924: The company entered broadcasting by leasing WDAP.
• 1925: The Tribune completed the Tribune Tower.
• 1926: The Tribune changed completed acquisition of station and adopted call letters WGN for World's Greatest Newspaper.
• 1948: The Tribune acquired the Washington Times-Herald after the death of Cissy Patterson. Cissy had acquired the Washington Times (est. 1894) and the Washington Herald (est 1906) from the Hearst family.
• 1948: Tribune opened WGN-TV in Chicago and WPIX in New York City
• 1956: The Tribune Company purchased the Chicago American from the Hearst family.
• 1960? : The Tribune acquired the Gore Newspapers Company which owned The Pompano Sun-Sentinel and Fort Lauderdale News
• 1963: The Tribune acquired Sentinel-Star Company
• 1964: The Tribune acquired WQCD-FM in New York City
• 1965: The Tribune acquired Denver based KWGN-TV
• 1968: Re-incorporated in Delaware with a subsidiary structure.
• 1973: The Tribune acquired the Los Angeles which it morphed into the Los Angeles Daily News.
• 1975: The Tribune syndicated the U.S. Farm Report news show
• 1981 The Tribune organized its broadcasting unit as Tribune Broadcasting Company and production unit as Tribune Entertainment Company.
• 1983: The Tribune became a public company.
• 1985: Tribune Broadcasting acquired KTLA of Los Angeles independent from Kohlberg Kravis Roberts for $510M and sold Los Angeles Daily News to satisfy cross-ownership regulations.
• 1986: acquired the Daily Press of Newport News, Va.
• 1991: Tribune sold the Daily News to British businessman Robert Maxwell.
• 1993: Tribune Company created Tribune Education which acquired educational publishers
• 1996: Tribune worked with AOL to create Digital City online publications.
• 2000 Tribune acquired the Los Angeles-based Times Mirror Company in a US$8.3 billion merger transaction.
• 2007 Sam Zell took the Tribune Company private in a $8.2 billion transaction.
• 2008-2011: The Tribune entered a prolonged bankruptcy with a record $13 billion in debt.
• July 13, 2012: the Tribune Company reorganized with joint ownership by Oaktree Capital Management, JPMorgan Chase and Angelo, Gordon & Co..
• 2013: Tribune Company spun off its newspaper holdings as Tribune Publishing and renamed itself Tribune Media.
  • 2015: Tribune Publishing acquired the San Diego Union-Tribune
  • 2016: the company shortened its name to TRONC and had an IPO on the NASDAQ with the symbol TRNC.
• 2013: Tribune acquired Local TV, which owned several TV Stations, from Oak Hill Capital Management.
• 2014: Tribune had an offering on the NYSE with symbol TRCO.
• 2017-2018: There are merger negotiations between Tribune Media and Sinclair Media Group.
