Church of the Nazarene
The Church of the Nazarene is a denomination that rose from the Holiness Movement that developed during the Second Great Awakening (1790-1840) within the Methodist branch of Protestantism.
The church has a long history of ministering to the homeless and international missions. The group has a strong educational system. They chose the name "Nazarene" as the elitists of the Biblical age divisively referred to Jesus Christ as "The Nazarene" and the church sees itself as an advocate of the downtrodden and not the elite.
The current church traces its origins to the The First General Assembly which was held in Chicago in 1907. This meeting led to the merger of several groups including The Los Angeles based Church of the Nazarene founded by Dr. Phineas F. Bresee in 1895 and the Association of Pentecostal Churches of America.

- 1895: Los Angeles based Church of the Nazarene merged with Association of Pentecostal Churches of America during the First Great Assembly to create the Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene in Chicago.
- 1908: The Holiness Church of Christ of Pilot Point, Tx joined the movement in the Second Great Assembly.
- 1908: The Pennsylvania Conference of the Holiness Christian Church joined the movement.
- 1911: The People's Mission Church joined the movement
- 1925: The People's Mission church left to join the Pentecost Pilgrim Church
- 1919: At the fifth General Assembly in Nashville, the group voted to remove "Pentecostal" to avoid confusion with the Pentacostal movement.
- 1922: The Bible Missionary Church separated from the movement.
- 1950: The Hephzibah Faith Missionary Association joined the movement.
- 1952: The International Holiness Mission of London joined.
- 1958: The Gospel Workers Church of Canada joined.
- 1988: The Nigerian based Church of the Nazarene joined.
