Koninklijke Ahold Delhaize N.V., commonly known as Ahold Delhaize or Ahold is an international powerhouse in the food sector based in the Netherlands. The name "Ahold" is short for Albert Heijn Holding.
The company holds many notable grocery stores around the world. They used to own more but were forced to sell several major brands for monopoly concerns. I will look primarily at mergers in the United States as I encounter them in other research.
- 1887: Albert Heijn, Sr. opened the first Albert Heijn grocery store in Oostzaan, Netherlands.
- 1973: the holding company changed its name to Ahold and set on a course of international expansion.
- 1991: Ahold acquired Tops Friendly Market which had 145 stores and 11,000 associates. Ahold was forced to sell some stores due to monopoly concerns.
- 2006: Ahold sold Tops Friendly Market, which had been pared down to 72 stores, to Morgan Stanley..
- 2000: Royal Ahold bought 51% of Peapod and the rest in 2001:
History of Peapod
Peapod is a grocery delivery service based in Chicago.
- 1989: Andrew Parkinson and Thomas Parkinson started the Peapod grocery delivery service.
- 1996: They launched their website and become a pioneer in electronic commerce.
- 1997: Peopod held an IPO on the NASDAQ with the symbol PPOD.
- 2000: Ahold acquired US Foodservice in a deal valued at $2.68 billion.
- 2007: Ahold sold US Foodservice in a deal involving Clayton, Dubilier & Rice Fund VII LP and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. for $7.1 Billion.
