Pilot Flying J

Pilot Flying J offers an interstate network with over a 150 truck stops and numerous convenience stores. Truck stops offer fuel, dining, showers and other amenities for travelers.

Corporate History

James Arthur Haslam fought in the Korean War. On returning home he joined Fleet Oil and managed the Sail Oil chain in Tennessee. Haslam decided to start his own firm.

• 1958: James Auther Haslam incorporated Pilot Oil Corporation with $6,000 to invest. He bought a station in Gate City, Va.
• 1965: Pilot was in debt. Haslam signed an agreement with Marathon Oil for a $4 million loan and a steady supply of fuel.
• 1976: Pilot opened its first convenience store in market.
• 1977: Pilot acquired Lonas Oil Co. of Knoxville, Tennessee⁴.
• 1981: Pilot opened its first travel center in Corbin, Ky.⁴
• 1985: Pilot began to add restaurant chain franchises to the Travel Centers.
• 1988: Haslam bought Marathon's share of the company.
• 1993: Pilot, with 60 centers, formed a joint partnership with Marathon Petroleum Company and took the name Pilot Travel Centers. Marathon converted Speedway truck stops to the brand.
• 1994, Pilot acquired 11 Pro Stop stations.
• 1995: Pilot had 80 travel centers and 51 convenience stores.
• 2003: Pilot acquired Williams Truck Stop for $189 million.
• 2008: Pilot, funded by CVC Capital, bought out Marathon's interest in the chain.
• 2014: Pilot gained controlling interest in Mr. Fuel.
• 2014: Pilot borrowed $750 million from CVC to take the company private.
• 2015: The Haslam family bought CVC's stake in the company.
• 2009-2010: Pilot acquired majority interest in Flying J which had filed chapter 11. Pilot started using the D.B.A. Pilot Flying J

  Flying J

  Flying J was created by O. Jay Call. The Call family had been developing filling stations since 1928. Jay Call wanted to start his own chain which he called "Flying J" as he loved flying and his name was Jay. Mr. Call developed travel centers for truckers. He bought refineries and the company grew large. Sadly, the love of flying led to an untimely end when he crashed in a Cessna Citation. A dip in oil prices forced his company into bankruptcy. The company FJ Management details the remaining holdings of the family.

  • 1968: Jay Call organized his four gas stations as The Flying J. He loved flying and his name was Jay.
  • 1979: Flying J debuted its firt travel plaza in West Haven, Utah. It included restaurants and a hotel.
  • 1980: Flying J purchased refinery and gas processing assets of Inter-City Gas Ltd. for $31 million to help secure access to fuel.
  • 1986: Flying J bought refining and retail operations from Canada's Husky Oil Ltd. This included refineries in Cheyenne, Salt Lake City, Cody and a pipeline from Wyoming to Nebraska. The company then began building a system of truck stops with franchised restaurants, filling stations and other amenities.
  • 1993: Flying J operated 63 travel plazas and was making over $800 million per year.
  • 199?: Jay Call started a 1,500-acre cattle ranch in Montana.
  • 1994: The company started a separate brand of hotels called Crystal Inn named after Jay's daughter.
  • 1995: Crystal became the manager of the chain.
  • 2007: Flying J declared bankruptcy saying that a sharp drop in oil prices meant they could not pay obligations.
• 2010: The FTC required that PFJ sell 26 locations to Love's Travel Stops to ease anti-trust concerns.
• 2011: PFJ started a program called Truckers Against Trafficking. (truckersagainsttrafficking.org) which trains truck drivers to spot the signs of trafficking on the road.
• 2011: Jim Haslam's son Bill was elected Governor of Tennessee.
• 2012: Jimmy Haslam, the CEO of PFJ, became the majority owner of the Cleveland Browns.
• 2016: PFJ formed another joint venture called PFJ Southeast LLC.
• 2017: Berkshire Hathaway acquired a 38.6% stake in Pilot Flying J for $2.76 billion with plans to increase its stake to 80% by 2023.^1,2
