Sapp Bros is a chain of travel centers with locations in the midwest and mountain west. The company's headquarters are in Omaha, Ne.
Corporate History
The company has a timeline on its corporate page. It appears that the company has remained family owned since its inception in 1971 and that most of the growth has been organic. Their timeline shows the opening of each plaza. I only show the first few stations, but list the mergers and acquisitions.
The company has been buying up companies that sell propane in the midwest. I will add additional information from other sources as I encounter it in my research on business history.
- 1971: The company opened as Sapp Bros. Truck Plaza in Omaha, Ne.
- 1971: Sapp modified a nearby water tower to look like a coffee pot and adopted the image as its logo.
- 1978: They opened a second plaza in Council Bluffs, Ia.
- 1980: Company incorporated as Sapp Bros. Petroleum.
- 1982: Sapp opened a third facility in Fremont, Ne.
- 1983: Sapp opened a plaza in Cheyenne.
- 1984: Sapp opened a plaza in Odessa, Ne
- 1986: Sapp opened its plaza in Denver.
- 1988: Company rebranded as Sapp Bros. Travel Centers.
- 1995: Sapp acquired Poland Oil and Pro Oil.
- 1996: Sapp acquired Lohr Petroleum of Columbus, Ne.
- 1996: Sapp acquired Allen Oil of Irvington, Ne which had a propane business and sold lubricants.
- 1997: Sapp acquired Nielsen Oil and Propane of West Point, Ne and Dettleson Oil of North Platte, Nebraska.
- 1999: Sapp merged with Oil Products Company of Omaha.
- 1999: Sapp acquired Fuel Tech with locations in Blair, Osh Gosh and North Platte.
- 1999: Sapp acquired Bargmann Oil of West Point, Ne.
- 1999: Sapp created a subsidiary called SBT, Inc which engages in transportation.
- 2004: Sapp acquired Garold M. Smith Oil & LP Co. of Salix, IA.
- 2004: Sapp acquired Stuhr Oil of York, Ne.
- 2005: Saqp acquired Jurgens Oil
- 2005: Sapp acquired Tri-State Petro of Salix, Ia.
- 2006: Sapp acquired Fairway Oil in Blair, Ne.
- 2006: Sapp acquired Rains Oil in Crete, Ne.
- 2007: Sapp acquired Wards Propane of Elgin, Nebraska.
- 2007: Sapp merged with Pollard Propane of Clarks, Ne.
- 2013: Sapp offered Bulk DEF (see below)
- 2014: Sapp revamped the coffee pot tower in Council Bluffs, Ia.
