2005 has been a troubling year for the airline industry. A spike in fuel, drop in demand and market uncertainty pushed many carriers to the brink and has led to a new round of industry consolidation.
In 2005, US Airways filed bankruptcy, merged with American West and re-emerged. The company hopes to establish itself as a premiere low cost carrier.
The merger makes US Airways the fifth largest US carrier with a payroll of 38,000. The company has its headquarters in Tempe, Az and trades under the symbol LCC (LCC stands for Low Cost Carrier).
US Airways and American West both have strong representation in the western air market.
