Auto Nation is a creation of entrepreneur H. Wayne Huizenga who was seeking to create a national auto store. Mr. Huizenga began his career in the waste disposal industry by building Waste Management Corporation. He later began buying up video stores to create the nationwide Blockbuster brand.

Huizenga aspired to create a nationwide auto dealership and began buying used car dealerships under the brand: Auto Nation USA.

The corporate entity of Auto Nation was created in 1981 as Republic Industries. Mr. Huizenga took controlling interest in Republic Industries in 1995 and became its chairman.

Republic Industries began acquiring car dealerships, including Auto Nation, and car rental firms including Alamo and Enterprise. In 1998, Republic Industries spun off its waste disposal holdings as Republic Services.

The company has expanded to over 300 franchised locations and became the first dealership to sell over ten million vehicles in June 2015.
