The Hertz Corporation History

The Hertz Company is a car-rental firm that traces its history to Walter L. Jacobs who began renting Model-T Fords in 1918. The company was acquired by John D. Hertz in 1923. Mr. Hertz was founder of the Yellow Taxi Cab Company and Yellow Truck and Coach Manufacturing and named Hertz-Drive-Ur-Self.

Hertz sold the firm to GM in 1923 and repurchased it under the umbrella of "The Omnibus Corporation" in 1953 which then changed its name to "The Hertz Corporation."

After a brief stint trading on the NYSE, Hertz was purchased by RCA, then by UAL (United Airlines), then Park Ridge Corporation (a division of Ford Motor Company).

In 2005-2006 Ford sold interest in the firm to a private equity group with went public in 2006 on the NYSE with the symbol HTZ as Hertz Global Holdings.

Hertz has offer 3000 staffed car rental locations throughout the world and a Gold Point Reward program.
