Yum! Brands
Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM) owns the brands KFC, Taco Bell, PizzaHut and WingStreet (which is usually inside or adjacent to a PizzaHut).
Yum! Brands was formerly owned by Pepsi which spun off its restaurant holdings in 1997 as Tricon Restaurant Group. Tricon changed its name to Yum with the acquisition of Long John Silvers in 2002, which it sold in 2011.
Kentucky Fried Chicken
Harlan Sanders began selling fried chicken at a gas station he owned in Corbin, Kentucky in the 1930s. The operations added a full restaurant and motel known as Sanders Court and Caf´. During this period he perfected his chicken recipe with pressure cookers and 11 secret spices. Due to the success of the restaurant, the Kentucky governor gave Harlan Sanders the honorary title "colonel."
On learning that the freeway would bypass his operations, he sold his first shop and began traveling with hopes of selling his recipe.
In 1952, Pete Harmon of Salt Lake City took up the offer and added deep fried chicken to their menu at their restaurant in 1952. A sign painter came up with the name "Kentucky Fried Chicken." Pete Harman declared the recipe "finger licking good." The first KFC franchise is on the corner of 3900 South and State Street.
KFC was fundamental in establishing the restaurant franchising concept. It had grown to 600 franchises by 1964 when Colonel Sanders sold to investors remaining in quality control.
The company went public in 1967, then was sold to the beverage manufacturer Heublein which was later acquired by RJ Reynolds in 1982. RJ Reynolds overextended itself with the purchase of NABISCO in 1986 and sold KFC to PepsiCo in 1986.
Pizza Hut
Pizza Hut was founded at 503 South Bluff in 1958 by Dan and Frank Carney who had borrowed $600 from their mother. Their sign has space for 9 characters, hence the name "Pizza Hut". The restaurant began franchising throughout Kansas, then the states, and abroad. The company merged with PepsiCo in 1977.
Taco Bell
In 1946, Glenn Bell opened his first hotdog stand, "Bell's Drive In" at the age of 23 in San Bernardino, California. After six years he sold the hotdog stand and opened a taco stand named Taco Tia.
Glenn Bell opened the first Taco Bell in Downey, California in 1962 and began franchising in 1964. The franchise grew quickly to 100 stores by 1967. Taco Bell went public in 1970 with 325 restaurants. PepsiCo bought out Glenn Bell in 1978.
