The Burlington Coat Factory began with a $75,000 investment by librarian Henrietta Milstein to buy a factory outlet store in Burlington, NJ to be run by her husband Milton and his father Abe.
The company focused primarily on coats at first but quickly expanded from seasonal coat sales to general apparel and linens and has recently opened a line of products for infants under the brand "Baby Depot."
The company is noted for quality apparel at factory direct pricing.
Burlington Coat Factory was purchased from the family by Bain Capital in 2006 and went public in 2013 on the NYSE with the symbol BURL. The company's headquarters are in Florence, NJ.
