Stewart Title was created in 1893 when attorney Maco Stewart purchased the Gulf City Abstract Company in Galveston, Texas.
The company began a gradual expansion through Texas with strategic acquisitions and new offices. By 1950 Stewart Title began expanding outside Texas with offices in New Mexico.
In the 1960s Stewart had expanded with 180 issuing offices in Arizona, California, Florida, Colorado and Louisiana and began adding its first computerized products.
In the 1970s, Stewart created the holding company Stewart Information Services Corporation (SISCO) allowing it to offer real estate products outside traditional title insurance. The company went public on the NYSE with the symbol STC.
