Big Lots is a closeout retailer based in Columbus, Oh. In 2018, they had 1,400 stores in 47 states. They trade on the NYSE with the symbol BIG.
Corporate History
I compiled this merger chain primarily from Funding Universe and Wikipedia. There is some confusion on the name of the company in early years.
- 1967: Sol Shenk started Consolidated International and opened stores focusing on auto parts.
- 1971: Shenk opened a chain of Corvair Auto Stores.
- 1982: Consolidated Stores Corporation launches Odd Lots closeout stores.
- 1982: Odd Lots ended up with 100 cars from bankrupt DeLorean Motor Company.
- 1983: Revco acquired Odd Lots in an ill fated attempt to stave off hostile take overs.
- 198?: Revco introduced Big Lots name as there were some trade conflicts with Odd Lots..
- 1985: Revco sells Consolidated Stores in a $33.4 million stock offering.
- 1994: Consolidated Stores acquired Toy Liquidators which had 82 stores, adding 82 stores in 3
- 1996: Consolidated acquired Kay-Bee Toys for $315 million from Melville Corporation. They shortened name to KB Toys.
- 1997: Consolidated acquired MacFrugals which owned Pic 'N' Save stores for $995 million in stock:

McFrugal's had grown to be the second largest closeout retailer.
- 1950: William Zimmerman founded Pic 'N' Save Corporation in Culver City, California.
- 1991: Company changed its name to MacFrugals
- 2000: Consolidated sold KB Toys to Bain Capital for $305 million.
- 2001: Company changed its name to Big Lots, Inc.. They rebranded McFrugal's, Pic 'N' Save, and Odd Lots stores.
- 2006: Big Lots changed its ticker from BLI to BIG.
- 2011: Big Lots acquired Liquidation World Inc. which is a closeout retailer in closeout store with 89 locations in Canada.
- 2013: Big Lots left Canada and closed LW World.
