Verizon Wireless
Verizon is a leading player in the telecom and internet markets. (photos).
The company was created as Bell Atlantic in 1983 with the break up of the AT&T telephone monopoly. Bell Atlantic was the largest of the "Baby Bells." The company changed its name to Verizon in 2000 after the acquisition of General Telephone & Electronics Corporation in 2000. Verizon continues to provide land lines in these markets.
In 2000 Verizon, in a joint venture with Vodaphone, created a subsidiary called Verizon Wireless. Verizon Wireless began rolling out a nationwide cellular service (acquiring many small regional companies in the process). Today Verizon operates a nationwide 4G LTE network and are working on a 5G network and is the largest cellphone provider in the states.
The company has numerous cell towers, retail outlets and authorized retailers. This network includes companies like goWireless, Cellular Plus, Ensignal, Car Toys, etc..
In 2008, Verizon rolled out the Verizon Wireless Evolution stores which were designed to give customers an experience of voice, data, music, and video services.
In 2015 Verizon acquired AOL and in 2017 Verizon acquired Yahoo. These businesses are held in a division called Oath which is one of the largest internet properties.
Verizon's headquarters are in NYC. They trade on the NYSE with the symbol VZ. The video shows Verizon's take on their history:
