NPC Internation, Inc (National Pizza Company) is a franchisee of Pizza Hut and Wendys Restaurants with over 1000 locations.
Corporate History
NPCI began as a Pizza Hut franchise. In an attempt to diversify, they tried branching out and bought the Skipper's chain of restaurants. A steep increase in the price of pollock put the seafood chain in the red.
- 1962: Gene Bicknell opened a Pizza Hut franchise.
- 1974: The company incorporates as Southeast Pizza Huts, Inc..
- 1977: PepsiCo acquired the Pizza Hut franchise system.
- 1984: The company went public on the NASDAQ with symbol NPCI and name National Pizza Company.
- 1988: NPCI relocated to Kansas City, KS.
- 1989: NPCI acquired the Skipper's chain which sells fish and chips.
- 1993: NPCI acquired Tony Roma's.
- 1995: NPCI acquired an additional 588 Pizza Huts in a series of transactions.
- 1996: NPCI sold Skipper's
- 1998: NPCI reorganized and reduced stake in Tony Roma's.
- 2001: NPCI went private in manager led buyout.
- 2006-2011: NPCI acquired an additional 59 Pizza Huts.
- 2006: Merrill Lynch acquired NPCI.
- 2011: Olympus Partners acquired NPCI.
- 2013: NPCI joined the Wendy's franchise system and acquired 143 Wendy's.
- 2018: Olympus sold NPCI to an "unknown buyer" for $1 billion.
- 2020: NPC, which had over a billion in debt and rising labor costs, defaulted on an $800 million loan payment.3
