- 1997: Joe Hune, the chairman and CEO of Hector Salazar Jr. founded the firm with the acquisition of six leasing firms.
- 1997: The company went public on the NYSE with the symbol: URI.
- 1998: URI acquired U.S. Rentals, Inc. for either $1.2 billion and $1.31 billion depending on sources.
- 2006: HTS Acquisition, Inc. acquired the Highway Technology of URI.
- 2007: URI negotiated a $6.6 billion acquisition by Cerberus Capital Management which fell through.
- 2011: URI acquired RSC Holdings, Inc. giving the firm 13% of the equipment rental market.
- 2013: URI moved its headquarters from Greenwich, Connecticut to Stamford, Connecticut.
- 2014: URI acquired National Pump for $780 million.
- 2014: Fortune 500 added URI to its lists based on a reported $4.955 billion revenues in 2013.
- 2014: S&P 500 Index added URI to its index.
- 2017: URI acquired NES Rentals for $965 million..
- 2017: URI acquired the power generation assets of Cummins Inc..
- 2017: URI acquired Neff Corporation from Odyssey Investment Partners for $1.3 billion. Neff had 69 facilities and $867 million in equipment.
- 2017: URI acquired Superior Speedie Portable Services, Inc. which included Superior Logistics Services, Inc.. They had a fleet of 8,000 portable toilets and over 130 restroom trailers. It became United Rentals Reliable Onsite Services.
- 2018: URI acquired BakerCorp International for $715 million. This served as base for United Rentals Fluid Solutions.
- 2018: URI acquired BlueLine Rental for $2.1 billion in cash. BlueLine had 114 locations in 25 US states and 46,000 rental assets.
