J. Crew

J Crew is a company with headquarters at 770 Broadway in New York City that offers fashions for women, men, girls and boys. As of March 21, 2018, the Company operated 233 J.Crew retail stores, 121 Madewell stores, and 175 factory stores.

The company was founded in 1947 by Mitchell Cinader and Saul Charles as Popular Merchandise, Inc.. The company initially sold womens clothing through in home demonstration with the brand Popular Club Plan.

The company changed its name to J Crew in 1989 selling clothes through its popular catalog and retail stores. In 2002, J Crew hired Max Drexler who had been the CEO at The Gap.

The company acquired the Madewell brand and logo in 2004. They launched a new line of women's clothes and chain of stores with the brand in 2006. Previously, the brand was used by a clothing factory that was founded in 1937. The factories closed well before J Crews relaunch of the brand.

Corporate Ownership

Texas Pacific Group (TPG) invested in the firm in 1997 and the company held an IPO on the NYSE with the symbol JCG in July 2006. In 2011, TPG in conjunction with LP and Leonard Green & Partners re-acquired the company.
